Press space after each word. Backspace is allowed. Pasting is switched off. Words are compared after Unicode NFC normalisation, so different keyboards that produce the same letters score the same.

Before you start a Hindi test
- Turn on a Hindi keyboard. Windows has Inscript built in as "Hindi Traditional" and "Devanagari - INSCRIPT"; Android's Gboard offers Hindi in Devanagari, Hinglish and transliteration forms. Step-by-step setup.
- Practise the layout your exam uses. Inscript and Remington (GAIL) put letters on different keys, so speed on one does not carry over to the other. Compare the layouts.
- Type in logical order. Unicode stores Devanagari in the order it is pronounced: the vowel sign ि (i) is typed after its consonant even though it appears to the left, so कि is typed क then ि.

How Hindi characters are counted
TypeTez counts Unicode characters after NFC normalisation. A visible syllable can be several characters: किताब is 5 characters (क, ि, त, ा, ब), and क्ष is 3 (क, the virama ्, ष). On the Windows Inscript layout each of those characters in किताब is one key press, but letters on the Shift layer, such as ख (Shift with the क key), take two presses. So our character count is close to, but not the same as, the key depressions an exam counts. Full scoring method.

Some keyboards insert invisible joiner characters (ZWJ and ZWNJ) that only change how a conjunct is drawn. We ignore them when comparing, so they never count as mistakes.

Most of our Hindi passages write words such as सब्जी and रोज without the nukta dot. Passage hi-03 is a nukta drill: there, words like ज़रूरी need the dot. Read every Hindi passage.
